The Roca Estate is located in the hinterland of Vodice, on land surrounded by olive groves, where for more than a decade, Ante and Silvija Roca have been living their dream – creating authentic Dalmatian products in an atmosphere that exudes sincerity and tradition. "This isn't a business; it's a lifestyle that suits my wife and me," says Ante, whose entrepreneurial journey began in the hospitality industry and continued into pig farming and meat processing.
A search for meaning after the war and burnout from the hospitality business led Ante to the idea of starting his own production. He soon launched a pig farm and a prosciutto-curing house, relying on high-quality raw ingredients—because, as he says, "you can't make good prosciutto without them." Today, the estate raises around 100 pigs annually and sources additional pork legs from Slavonia. Their offerings include prosciutto, pancetta, kulen, and other products that regularly win awards—such as a Gold Medal in Tinjan and a bronze for their kulen in Slavonia, where Ante became the first Dalmatian to receive such recognition.
He sells 30% of his products through the on-site restaurant and shop, while the rest is sold at fairs and markets. "We can command a higher price through our hospitality services," notes Ante, who also collaborates with other family farms—for instance, by selling cow's cheese from local producer Ivana Mehić.
The space they have created is full of soul—every building is made of stone, every detail thoughtfully designed. The basement houses a traditional *konoba* (curing cellar) for prosciutto, and part of the estate has been converted into an ethno-museum. Visitors, especially from abroad, recognize this authenticity—from hosting local weddings to welcoming American guests eager for a genuine Dalmatian experience.
Ante clearly emphasizes the importance of local production for sustainable tourism: "Woe to the country that focuses on tourism but has no production of its own." Despite bureaucratic hurdles, he perseveres, believing in the value of domestic quality and in an entrepreneurial climate that can create jobs, extend the tourist season, and strengthen the local community. The Roca Estate is more than a business—it's a daily act of creation, a love for the land, and a life lived to the fullest.
